A fine quality, boxwood sugar or gesso mould carved with two beautifully detailed borders. This would have been used for moulding sugar for cake decoration and plaster (gesso) for decorative plaster work on frames or in buildings. Skilled carvers would carve moulds for both purposes and many of the smaller, finer moulds like this were used for both. This example is very finely carved, with excellent detail, and it dates from c.1800. It is in excellent condition.
