Item Description
A set of four 19th century, Shakespearian Series Tiles by Minton. Each tile is marked to the reverse “MINTONS CHINA WORKS STOKE ON TRENT” and they date from c.1880. They are decorated with brown transfer prints on a buff ground and each one shows a different scene from a play by Shakespeare. We have King Lear Act 1 Scene 1, Romeo and Juliet Scene 2 Act 2, Hamlet Act 1 Scene 1, and Macbeth Act 3 Scene 4. Within the designs the prints are signed ‘IMS’ by the artist John Moyr Smith. He was a Scottish architect who was later noted as an artist and designer and became famous for his designs for tiles. The tile depicting Romeo and Juliet has a chip to the base but other than that they have very minimal flaking to the glaze on the rims. Dimensions: Each tile is 15.3cm. square by 1cm deep.
