Item Description
A fine quality, Swansea creamware, 'tree and well' meat platter. This piece is impressed 'SWANSEA' to the base and it dates from c.1800. It is quite lightly potted, especially as it was made as a utility item, and the border is hand painted with a wide band of grapes and vine leaves, in mauve, green and dark brown. These platters were called 'tree and well' platters due to the shaping of the runs in the base which were designed to allow the juices to run from the meat. These could then be spooned out of the well at the end of the platter. This example is in very good condition. There are two small chips to the footrim, one of which is mostly under the glaze, and there is one small flake to the green enamel decoration on on of the vine leaves. Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £45. Western Europe add £10.
