Gustav Hausmann (German 1827-1899) Huge Gosau Lake Austria Alpine Landscape Oil

Brief Description:

A very large and magnificent original 1867 Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting depicting the outstanding Lake Gosau, in Austria, which is portrayed from the foothills of the Glacier Dachstein Mountain Range.

This truly remarkable Oil is both signed and dated (1867) by German artist: ''Gustav Hausmann'' (1827-1899).

Gustav Hausmann (born July 23, 1827, in Barbis, Germany, 13th April 1899 in Hanover) was a German painter, who mainly painted landscapes. His speciality was mountain images.

Gustav Hausmann was married to Johanne, born Fuess (* 1842 in Moringen, Northeim county, 1899 in Hanover), with whom he had two daughters, Louise Dorette Karoline, named Lisa (* September 2, 1871) and Martha (* 1878) . Lisa later married the writer Hermann Löns.

Born at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover in the small village of Barbis am Harz, Gustav Hausmann attended the gymnasium in Goslar, where his talent for painting soon became apparent. Subsequently, he received a scholarship from the heir to the throne and later King George V through the intermediary of the Hanoverian artist.

Hausmann, from 1845 to 1850 at the Polytechnic School in Hanover, was able to study landscape painting with Edmund Koken. In 1850 Hausmann went to Munich, where he continued his studies with Albert Zimmermann, Christian Morgenstern and August Seidel.

In 1856 Gustav Hausmann returned to Hanover, entered the Hanoverian artist's workshop in the same year, and quickly rose to become one of the most distinguished painters of the city. From 1862 to 1865 Hausmann taught Hanoverian princesses Friederike and Marie.

Even after the royal family fled to the Austrian town of Gmunden as a result of the Battle of Langensalza lost for the Kingdom of Hanover and the annexation of the kingdom by Prussia in 1866, Gustav Hausmann continued to receive commissions from Queen Marie of Hanover.

After 1866, the painter retired in Hanover and preferred to paint motifs from the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps as well as the Harz. In 1868 he lived in Schlägerstrasse 6 I in Hanover ]. In 1874 he acquired his own house in Am Bokemahle in Hanover. In the year of Hausmann's death, the Hannoversche Künstlervererverein organized a memorial exhibition for the painter in 1899, showing some 160 oil sketches.

The work is mounted within the original and as equally impressive heavily scrolled and gilt frame.

Exceptional attention to detail, portraying a majestic Alpine scene that is rarely seen on such a scale.
