1945, 'A Walk in the Park', Albert Rièra

Is it possible to find another painting so utterly charming? In this oil on canvas by French artist, Albert Rièra (1895-1968), a mother in a red skirt trundles her child in a pushchair through a leafy park. Tall trees, like inquisitive ranunculus stems, are planted into a disk of viridian. A peppering of people, enjoying a sunny afternoon, wander along paths of blancmange pink. No one is in a hurry and there's Angel Delight for tea.
