1957, Oil Painting - 'The Washstand,' Eva Holmberg-Jacobsson

One of our favourite artists and becoming increasing rare. This stunning oil by Eva Jacobsson depicts a French washstand in jaunty orange, a white ceramic jug and bowl. The oval mirror reflects palm trees in the south of France. The room is cool with hues of elastoplast and pea soup. Painted with the artists light touch, this Matisse-esque painting is calm and clean.

About the artist

Eva Holmberg-Jacobsson was a Swedish visual artist born in Malmö. She painted naive scenery and interiors in a lively colour palette, often bathing in a white yellow light.

Jacobsson was the daughter of engineer Carl Holmberg and Gerda Helena Jonasson and from 1942 married Karl-Erik Jacobsson. She studied at the Skåne School of Painting in Malmö in 1927 and at the Otte Sköld painter's school in Stockholm in 1929 and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and during studies to, among others, Hungary, Spain and France.

Separately, she performed at the SDS Hall in Malmö in 1942 and at Malmö Museum 1946 and at the Black Brother Monastery in Lund in 1952. She participated in joint exhibitions with Skåne Art Society and Helsingborg Art Association.

Her art consists of flowers, figure motifs, landscape and city views from France in a fresh color scheme. She is represented at the Malmö Museum, Helsingborg Museum,, Trelleborg Museum and Landskrona Museum.
