1980's, 'Spring Gardens', Janet Freeman

Part cubist, part post impressionist, this enigmatic oil painting on canvas by British artist Janet Freeman is a peach. The lilac sun rises in a salmon pink sky, illuminating copper and beech roof tops. Abstract trees, their leaves in sketched form, with bold graphic tree trunks.

About the Artist

Janet Freeman trained at the University of London Goldsmiths School of Art.

Her paintings are a transition from this approach towards a reflective, more abstract study of objects and symbols.

Colour and pattern are used to emphasise the unreality of the ‘life’ aspect of the picture. The move is towards the mystery of abstraction and pattern and their power to give multiple meanings.
