Early Ernest Race Antelope Chair

The Antelope chair was designed by Ernest Race in 1951 for the ‘Festival of Britain’. Heralded as the ‘New Elizabethan’ spirit with a sculptural, playful form, the Antelope chair won a silver medal at the Tenth Trienale furniture fair in Milan, making it an internationally recognised icon.

This is an early one, with the metal ball feet in situ and surviving in a great unrestored condition. The chair is firm with a sprinkling of very dark green paint almost black added, be it a while ago, to the metal frame and a touch up again some time ago on the yellow ply seat.

The chair is perfectly usable and we rather like that lived in look rather than shiny shiny. We do have another all red Antelope chair in similar condition and age.
