Here is an early 19th century Longcase Clock Dial from an old 8 day mechanical clock. The 2 winding holes shown at the centre of the dial was where the2 weights inside the clock case would have wound up each week, one operating the hourly strike and the other one would have powered the pendulum.
The clockmakers name appears on the dial. The painting in the arch would have indicated that is was for a customer from the countryside with an interest in country pursuits. The tartan corners might have also indicated that the customer had Scottish connections. The clockmaker would have bought the dial in and may well have stipulated elements of the designs he wanted for his customer.
The dial has been beautifully restored to its former glory and we have fitted a modern quartz mechanism to period style hands so that the clock dial will keep perfect time without the problem of having to wind it up. These dial are very scarce and make for very decorative features on the wall to go alongside pictures etc.
