A fruitwood comb back Windsor chair, sometimes referred to as a Goldsmith chair as it bears a resemblance to the chair once owned by 18th Century author, Oliver Goldsmith, now in the V&A. Egg and reel turned legs, both front and rear, united by a simple tapered H-stretcher. The shaped elm seat with two curved arm supports and a three part arm, the outer most elements of which have a swept out handhold. The upper sticks of the backrest supporting a crest with an ‘ear’ either end. The whole piece in a very pleasing golden chestnut colour. Minor repair as shown. Late 18th Century, attributed to the West Country.

Cunningham White's specialises in West Country Windsor chairs, specifically those from Devon and Cornwall. We also have a collection of folk art pieces and other antiques from the West Country and further afield that we feel compliment our inventory. Run from our home town of Totnes in South Devon, we are perfectly placed to uncover rare and desirable pieces from the region.

All our stock is sympathetically restored, where needed. We want all the furniture we sell to be enjoyed and used every day for years to come. We always leave pieces as original as possible though - we like our pieces to tell a story and don't try to hide this in any way.
