*SALE* Rietveld Red & Blue Chair

CUNNINGHAM WHITE'S
Faithful copy of the famous and iconic Red and Blue Chair by Gerrit Rietveld. Most likely an 'art college project' or such like, the chair has a 'scratch made' feel about it, although the original was also much like this too. A more accessible way of owning an absolute design classic. This one likely dates from the 1960s. Plywood and beech construction, as the original.

"The Red and Blue Chair is a chair designed in 1917 by Gerrit Rietveld. It represents one of the first explorations by the De Stijl art movement in three dimensions.
The original chair was constructed of unstained beech wood and was not painted until the early 1920s. Fellow member of De Stijl and architect, Bart van der Leck, saw his original model and suggested that he add bright colours. He built the new model of thinner wood and painted it entirely black with areas of primary colours attributed to De Stijl movement. The effect of this colour scheme made the chair seem to almost disappear against the black walls and floor of the Schröder house where it was later placed. The areas of colour appeared to float, giving it an almost transparent structure." - Wikipedia

At Cunningham White's we source decorative antiques and furniture. We are guided by great decorative value, recognising the emotion that can be gained from owning something that just looks and feels so good. We don't pin ourselves down to one particular style or period. We simply love good looking things.

Sam finds and Naomi fixes (although sometimes it's the other way round) and as a team we manage to always have a quality selection of stock in our collection.

We believe that antiques are the future. Timeless, quality pieces add so much character to any scheme and can make a house into a home. They are sustainable. They haven't been thrown away because they are made to last and they can be fixed. We do that bit for you (if it's needed). Antiques reflect our individuality and connect us to past generations. We will always try and find out the provenance of a piece and share that with our customers.

We work from a converted industrial unit in the characterful, vibrant and independently-minded community of Totnes, in beautiful South Devon.
