A complete dining set in solid oak by Thomas Whittaker of Littlebeck, aka Gnomeman. The set features a trestle ended table, a rare bench with shaped backrest, two rare carvers and two dining chairs. The surfaces of the table and bench and the backs of the chairs feature the characteristic ‘adzed’ finish. The chairs are upholstered in rich supple leather. Every piece features the gnome ‘signature’, used by Thomas Whittaker. All designed to fit together so, for example, the bench and carvers can be tucked under the table and the chairs fit nicely beside one another. All in excellent, near-new condition, with only very minor signs of use when closely inspected. The leather has some minor marks and light crazing due to use and age.

In ownership by the same family and well looked after since its purchase in the 1960s, it is now fresh to the market.

Thomas Whittaker of Littlebeck, Yorkshire worked under Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson before setting up his own workshops and concentrating on his characteristic ‘honeycomb’ adzed furniture. Not currently commanding the prices of Mouseman pieces, it is still a good investment and completely useable, quality, solid furniture.

This is a short British Pathe video about Thomas Whittaker:

At Cunningham White's we source decorative antiques and furniture. We are guided by great decorative value, recognising the emotion that can be gained from owning something that just looks and feels so good. We don't pin ourselves down to one particular style or period. We simply love good looking things.

Sam finds and Naomi fixes (although sometimes it's the other way round) and as a team we manage to always have a quality selection of stock in our collection.

We believe that antiques are the future. Timeless, quality pieces add so much character to any scheme and can make a house into a home. They are sustainable. They haven't been thrown away because they are made to last and they can be fixed. We do that bit for you (if it's needed). Antiques reflect our individuality and connect us to past generations. We will always try and find out the provenance of a piece and share that with our customers.

We gladly welcome visitors but please let us know when you plan to visit as we're often out. Our workshop is based in the grounds of a working rescue farm in the characterful, vibrant and independently minded community of Totnes in beautiful South Devon.
