A mid-century oil on board depicting two plated herring alongside a pot and glass.

It’s a little reminiscent of the French post-impressionist, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), who was the first to paint in this style. He often adopted unusual perspectives and sought to reduce objects down to their simplest forms.

Here, the artist has positioned us above the table at an angle, which allows us to see more of each object. He’s also used a muted palette of primarily brown, green and white to create an interesting mood.

The painting is signed ‘A Chicorp’ in the lower right and housed within its original frame.

Medium: Oil on board
Overall size: 28” x 21” / 71cm x 53cm
Year of creation: 1950
Provenance: France
Condition: Quite tired and it’s seen better days. There are areas of craquelure but the paint layer is stable. The frame is very worn but could be painted.
