2nd Set of 4 Different Asparagus Plates c.1900

4 Majolica Antique French Asparagus Plates A Curated Collection

I really love these fancy (dare I say 'gaudy') Barbotine (or 'Majolica' ) plates intended for serving asparagus and artichokes....and they are often seen for oysters as well. After some years of of being thought terribly 'old-fashioned', Barbotine has made a big comeback and is now highly collectible.

The French take the serving of food very seriously so that there is a ritual around many different dishes. They especially love fresh asparagus which appears so briefly in early spring...and they are mad for artichokes. They make rather a fuss over serving both these vegetables so that virtually every French home once had a set of special plates for serving them.

In the late 1800s this type of heavily embossed and colorful plates became popular for serving asparagus and artichokes and continued to be up until about the 1920s or so. Now they are wonderful as decoration on the dining room wall.

We have chosen these four plates from our large collection as we think they co-ordinate so well....and could be the start of your collection!

All these plates are documented by Maryse Bottero in her authoritative book, 'Artichauts et Asperge en Barbotine'.

For plates of this age, which is close to 100 years, these plates are excellent condition with though you may find a tiny chip or crack, but nothing serious. There is some slight discoloration on some and some crackling of the glaze but that gives them a nice antique patina.

These plates measures approx. 9 1/4 to 10 inches in diameter.

By Appointment

For a number of years now, we have had a business selling fine French vintage and antique linens, and a selected group of other vintage and antique items worldwide and please do let us know if you have any specific requests. We have a large stock of beautiful things and we enjoy the challenge of finding just what you are looking for.

To introduce ourselves, we are a husband and wife team, he's Irish and I'm American, who live in France in the charming and historic town in the South of France called Pezenas.

For us it is particularly special in that there is a street filled with over 20 antique shops just blocks from our house!

We travel often on weekends during the spring and summer to flea markets, 'brocantes' and antiques fairs all over the south of France, searching for the linens and the other items we sell.

When at home we enjoy our family--especially our children and our 3 adorable English grandchildren-- when they can visit us, or we can visit them in England.

My son comes to visit us once a year from America.

While my husband does all the 'admin' work for our business, I do lots of washing and ironing of the vintage linens we sell which strangely I can say I really enjoy!

I'd love to find more time to paint, knit and sew--and maybe that will happen!

All in all, we love our life here in France and the work we do to bring these fine old linens and antiques to our customers around the world.

Again thank you so much for visiting us...and do come back often...we are always adding 'new' old things...and we love making new friends!
