Item Details

A beautiful large Norwegian folk art bentwood box, known as a tine or tina. These traditional boxes were produced in Norway and Sweden and were often used for storage of food. This is a particularly attractive, large early example. It has Rosemaling handpainted decoration in a style found in the Os region on the western coast of Norway. The design features typical flowers, leaves and scrolling against a dark blue ground. On one side is the year 1885, and on the other an inscription in Scandinavian gothic, a script that is particularly difficult to read. I haven't been able to decipher it fully but I think it says something about cake! The box is made of bent wood secured with two rows of birch root lacing. It has an arch-shaped handle and the usual closing posts at the ends. The paint has an attractive aged patina, and the box displays beautifully.

It is in good condition with minor wear commensurate with its age and use.
This beautiful box is a wonderful decorative piece and would be a welcome addition to any home.
