This stately village elder is hand carved by the talented woodworkers of Baule, an area of the Ivory Coast. He is wearing a Kufi cap, orange robe and green sandals. Being seated on a splendid green chair and holding a green cane in his right hand, this may indicate that the figure represents a blind man. His left hand has some damage as seen in the photograph.

Sourced in France, the country has long had involvement with its colonies in Africa, including the Ivory Coast. This item has some age and may well have been taken home by a French bureaucrat in the 1950s.
