Original mid-century oil on board of a circus themed scene. Featuring a clown with a small black dog, figures mingling inside a big top tent and horses.

Painted by Helmut Petzsch (German 1920-2008), the painting is signed to verso and in a solid wood gold painted frame.

Helmut Petzsch, SSA was a painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes, urban scenes, and figure subjects. He was born in Berlin to a German father and English mother and following the death of his father in 1932. Helmut came with his family to England where they became naturalised British citizens. He served in the British Army in World War II, and on demobilisation he was accepted as a student at Edinburgh College of Art 1947-51, where he studied under William Gillies. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1952, and also extensively with the Society of Scottish Artists, being elected a member of that group in 1951. He wrote a book 'Architecture in Scotland' which was published by Longman in 1971, and lived in Edinburgh for many years.
