TO PURCHASE THIS ITEM, PLEASE CONTACT [email protected] FOR SHIPPING COSTS & PAYMENT OPTIONS. THANKS.

Intriguing and characterful old French marionette donkey with nodding carved wooden head, carved wooden teeth and tongue, leather ears and silver plated bells.

Dating from circa 1860s.

With a delightfully naive carved wooden head, which contains carved wooden teeth (some of which are missing), there has been an old repair at some stage though this seems to add to its charm. With hidden string for articulating the nodding head.

Naive hand-painted features, leather ears and fur made from some sort of real hide.

The body is made from two planks of wood with a handle made from a polished branch.

The ears and collar are leather and the bells are silver plated metal.

The specific use is unknown but is likely to have been used in a school or church for plays, performances and story-telling.

  • W: 54cm (21.26in)

Welcome to HAIRSINES, the family business of Kevin & Jenni.

Our story so far... Sourcing, restoring and selling beautiful decorative antiques, stylish collectables and unusual props may seem a world away from our previous careers in the catering and publishing sectors, but we don't think so. Today's decisions and ideas are still formed around good design, historical accuracy and pleasing aesthetics.

Our career change occurred in 2011, when our growing family encouraged the progression of our home accessories business into one that combined an existing appreciation of history with an evolving passion for antiques.

These days we scour European brocantes and vide greniers, flea markets and international trade fairs, whilst keeping a keen eye on the UK's auction rooms and private collections.  Back at our Cambridgeshire hub, the business never sleeps; our valued customer-base across the world can rely on a regular flow of exciting new pieces.

Always glad to meet old friends and new, we look forward to seeing you at the Kempton Park, Newark, Ardingly and Le Mans international antique fairs.
