Large antique iron-bound oak trunk, produced by Hancocks of London, and supplied to Lord Headley. Dating from the early 20th Century, this trunk was originally supplied with a full silver dinner service for Lord Headley, an Irish peer, to take on his travels. Unfortunately the full silver service and the removable interior fittings have been removed, but the fitted interior is still present along with the original makers label, and remnants of the original labels to identify which items would be placed where. There is also an engraved brass plaque on the top inscribed 'Lord Headley'.

Hancocks of London was established in 1849 on the corner of Bond Street and Bruton Street, and is still in business today. Famed for their silver, gemstones and jewellery, they held Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, Edward VII, King George V and Queen Elizabeth (Queen Mother). In 1856 Queen Victoria entrusted Hancocks with making the newly introduced Victoria Cross, the highest military award for gallantry in the British Armed Forces - an honour that they continue to this day.

Lord Headley (Rowland George Allanson-Winn) was born in 1855, and died in 1935. He became a prominent convert to Islam in 1913, taking the name Shaikh Rahmatullah Al-Farooq. He was a well travelled man, and was even offered the throne of Albania in 1925, along with $500,000 + $50,000 per year, but he refused it.....

Condition is solid, but there is one handle missing (see photos) and the interior could do with a clean. Would make a statement as a coffee table or blanket box.
