Giant antique book titled Modern Building and Architecture, dating from circa 1870. The book has been professionally rebound, and the original leather spine title section has been saved and reused in the binding. This huge lump of Victorian practicality and thoroughness is a book from which, armed with reasonably competent tradesmen, it would be possible to build to the last detail a complete town, provide water and gas, drain and sewer it, warm it, ventilate it, and connect it to the outside world with bridges. In and around the town can be built farms (farmhouses, barns, stables, greenhouses), industries (gas works, cotton mill, machine factory, tile works, brewery), shops, working men's houses, villas for the middle classes, schools, warehouses, market sheds, but no church; all with details down to windows, doors and molding profiles. The text provides a thorough grounding in all this, from specifications and materials to taste and decoration, adds a glossary of terms, which has been translated to French and German, and takes a look at the 1867 Paris and Havre International Exhibitions. Robert Scott Burn was the general editor of this and produced a similar book around 1863 entitled Working Drawings & Designs in Architecture and Building, which focused only on British styles of the time. The Modern Building and Architecture book also reviews Continental and historical styles, such as Elizabethan and Gothic. The first half of the book provides all the details for construction and the second half consists of approx 50 plates (all double page) showing construction styles and designs (see some examples in the photos - too many to show, but some amazing images). In excellent condition with only some minor foxing to the pages.
