Large antique hammered copper saucepan dating from the late 19th Century. Stamped with the makers' mark (Moresi & Lucca Coppersmiths, 58 Neal St, London), Savoy Court and later SGR, 1 & 6 - this piece was salvaged from a London refinishing company over 30 years ago, and has not seen the light of day since. This particular pan is believed to date from the very first days of the Savoy Hotel, circa 1890. The hotel was built on the site of the former Savoy Palace, which had been almost destroyed by a fire in 1864, leaving only the walls and the chapel intact. It was acquired in 1880 by Richard D'Oyly Carte to build the Savoy Theatre for the production of Gilbert & Sullivan operas, of which he was the producer. In the early days, D'Oyly Carte engaged Cesar Ritz (founder of the Ritz Hotel) and Georges Auguste Escoffier (world famous French chef), so it is likely that this pan was used by Escoffier at some time during his years in the kitchens of the hotel. The pan has undergone a recent deep clean and polish. Made from thick copper (approx 3mm) and with a castelated base, the pan has clearly undergone some repairs in its life, but the tin lining is still OK. Has a cast iron handle, measuring 35cm (13¼") long attached with copper rivets. Would be perfect as a decorative planter or even an unusual log basket, as there is a VERY tiny split in the copper/tin on the bottom edge (see final 2 photos).

Measures: 29.5cm diameter (excluding handle) x 26cm deep (11½" dia x 10¼"deep)
