This lovely, two-sided, illuminating advertising sign for HAFA oil (huile) has an unusual 3D design/construction and a fantastic light output.
The two plastic faces have an opaque white background with raised black and orange sections for the details. The faces are housed in an aluminium frame and illuminated by two fluorescent tubes. HAFA are one of the major French motor oil companies - their logo hasn't changed much over the years, but this slightly rounded typography proceeded the straighter, more angular logo used during the '40s and '50s, dating this sign to the '60s/early '70s.

There are a few areas of damage to the sign; one face has a slight knock to the upper right corner, a small hole towards the upper of the letter 'F' and a small split to the black plastic above the letter 'A' as well as some dirt managing to get between the lower orange section and the backing (see the slight mottling visible in the angled photo). The other face has a split running along the top right of the upper orange section (not immediately noticeable). Both faces have a damaged dot to the 'i' of 'huile' and both have some surface scratching (not noticeable when illuminated). The aluminium frame does have some holes to the side where hanging brackets would've been attached - the sign now sits happily on it's base and has been professionally re-wired with a standard UK three-pin plug.

Although they all look similar the photos are different, they show; side one (wire exiting on the right) illuminated, side one un-illuminated, side two (wire exiting on the left) un-illuminated, side two angled and a detail of side one.

The sign is 70cm wide, 60.5cm high and 20cm deep.

I’m Louis Walpole. Over a decade of working for and alongside some of the best antique dealers in the country at London’s renowned Portobello Road have helped me to form a detailed understanding of, and appreciation for, a diverse array of antiques. In 2016, after ‘dabbling’ in the trade since childhood I decided to follow my heart and (ignoring a myriad of people advising against it) leave my salaried job to trade full time. Since then I have travelled around England and Western Europe collecting the pieces that particularly interest me. These pieces loosely follow the themes of; automotive, advertising, scientific and industrial. I have a select number of items on display in Atlam on Portobello Road. The shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 5pm.

If you would like to view any of my pieces in London, please get in touch to confirm that they’re at the shop or to arrange for me to take them there for you. It may also be possible for me to bring items to your home/bar/garage/pub etc so that they can be fully appreciated in-situ, again please just get in touch and we’ll see what can be organised."
