Item Description

Spillers Ltd was a British company that was founded in 1827 by Joel Spiller - they owned flour milling operations, operated bakeries and also sold pet food and equine feeds... By the early 20th century it was the dog food element of the business that the Spillers name was renowned for. This mid-sized, vibrant enamel sign for "Spillers Shapes - The Mixed Biscuits for Dogs" is a lovley example of it's type. It's likely to date to the 1930s/'40s, has an attractive yellow and green colourway and retains a lovely, deep surface gloss. Gernreally it's survived the decades well, though there is some light surface scratching, a few small patches of enamel loss scattered across the surface of the sign especially in the upper right, but nothing that affects the legibility or impact of the piece. The sign can be hung using it's original mounting holes and displays well. It measures 76cm wide x 51cm high.
