This beautiful late 18th century / early 19th century (1780-1820) hand painted and black lacquered cupboard or linen press comes from the Beijing region in China. It was imported into the United Kingdom in the 1990`s. The two front doors are hinged in by wooden dowels which slide into place and open to expose a top shelf with two original drawers, a middle shelf which is a later replacement, and a cavity beneath which would have been used originally for storing blankets or clothes. The carcass is a hardwood which although bowed in places is still solid throughout. The original lacquer finish has been repaired in some places, the lower part of the front doors for example, although these repairs have age and are weathered in well. Needless to say it displays plenty of lived in character all over although this is a large part of its charm. The original paintings are quite beautiful. The cupboard itself functional. Please note that there is the correct pin to fasten the front doors although I had misplaced this during the photo shoot (it was in my pocket).

Lost Property represents the fine city of Norwich in the heart of East Anglia and has been trading there since 2010. For Lost Property, trading antiques and vintage is the fine line walked between artistry and commerce, feast or famine. It’s the bittersweet tug of wanting to hold onto something forever, but knowing you have to let it go. The Lost Property ‘eye’ focuses on the functional and the decorative with a rebellious slant towards the crude and imperfect.
