19th century Hungarian pine Marriage Trunk or Dowry Chest dated 1872. These were often made for and presented to the couple on their wedding day, filled with gifts and necessities for their future together. They are often symbolically painted using traditional bright motifs such as the garlands of flowers depicted on this example. The sides and front columns are painted with a faux wood grain in this instance.
This chest has some honest repairs to three of the four corner feet and a small inlet piece of pine to the bottom left corner of the sliding drawer. There is some evidence of historic worm which was treated prior to import and will present no problem. The carcass is strong and sound. The hinges are well connected and the drawer slides freely. Poetic and practical, these chests or coffers adapt very well to contemporary interiors. I have one in my bedroom to store blankets and bedding.

Lost Property represents the fine city of Norwich in the heart of East Anglia and has been trading there since 2010. For Lost Property, trading antiques and vintage is the fine line walked between artistry and commerce, feast or famine. It’s the bittersweet tug of wanting to hold onto something forever, but knowing you have to let it go. The Lost Property ‘eye’ focuses on the functional and the decorative with a rebellious slant towards the crude and imperfect.
