1950s abstract in watercolour. Unsigned. Very much in the style of Roy Turner Durrant (1925-1998), Camberwell School of Art 1948-1952.
The use of closely drawn parallel lines and use of black definition lines against a watercolour wash, can be seen in some other work by that artist, between roughly 1952-54 but also from some very similar work to this which he completed in the mid 1940s. This is predominantly painted in greys and blacks - again leading us perhaps to Roy Turner Durrant - with small accent splashes of pink, yellow and orange. We are unsure which way "up" is correct to display it, so take your pick!
This has been removed from a broken frame but we have retained the mount and backing board as it bears a Heffers Galley Cambridge label. Roy Turner Durrant was the Art Gallery Manager at Heffers from 1963 until the mid 70s, and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions.
This is painted with a screenprint verso, the name Blackshaw (?) in pencil, which looks more like a framer's note, possibly the customer's name for whom it was framed. Image within mount aperture 18.7 x 26.7 cm, mount 35.7 x 42.7 cm. We will send the old backing board bearing the gallery label with it. Heffers rarely stocked any bad work, selling for names such as Julia Ball, Robert Sadler, Christopher Cornford etc

Nailsworth sits between Cheltenham and Bath on the A46.

MastheadArt has been trading since 2004, we specialise in salvaged and studio art of all ages, and carry a lot of smaller mounted stock perfect for gallery walls. We love the quirky smaller pieces of work which create visual talking points, and love to help someone get their real art collection off to a truly affordable start. You’ll never go back to chain store or mass produced imported prints again!
We sell at art and vintage fairs, through an interiors store in the Cotswolds, and through a variety of online platforms. We have sold in excess of 1,200 pictures online.

MastheadArt is run by Jo Eveleigh, an art dealer for 14 years commercially, a private collector prior to developing the business, operating from the leafy Cotswolds with regular sojourns in Devon and Derbyshire. Her favourite finds are studio collections of hoarded art, producing gems for the re-sale market from years of sketch collections and work which the artist never brought to the marketplace. Carrying antique stock right through to contemporary work, her favourite years are the fifty years of greatest cultural swings in Britain, between the 1920s and 1970s.

A veteran of the car industry, and having lived in various parts of the UK, Jo is now thoroughly enjoying saving great pictures for the nation. Her extensive stocklist bears testament to the fact that Jo always says she cannot walk away from a great picture. Lots of her stock is eminently suitable for creating salon wall arrangements, smaller mounted works which make wonderfully quirky space fillers.

Having had a gallery in previous years, Jo now enjoys the flexibility of selling online, through art fairs, and at a small number of retail outlets throughout the year. Viewings of any item can take place at her permanent gallery wall space at Betty and Beatties Vintage Interiors in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, where an amount of her stock is in display but any item seen online can be taken there for viewing and purchase. If you are close to any of her regular trips to Devon and Derbyshire, she is always pleased to try and meet up at a suitable venue to facilitate viewings too.
