Mid-late 19th century oil painting on panel, a breezy coastal scene with a rowing boat approaching figures on landing steps under a building.
Inscribed to the back of the panel (seen by a very bright light being held to the panel!) "Dieppe France" and signed indistinctly front lower left A. H (or N/M). J(or S)*****.
Good strong colour. Craquelure is present in the lower quarter of the image.
Image measures 31 x 26 cm, moulded and gilded frame overall 48.5 x 42.5 cm.
Frame has pencil inscription "11/70 Shildon" to the back but we suspect these are framers marks, the difference in wood at the back suggests the frame is more recent (but still with some age) than the painting.
The Plymouth framer's label to the back of the painted panel enables us to give some date context to this painting. Frederick Hall (1819-1892) arrived in Plymouth (at 1, Ham Street) in 1860 as an experienced carver and frame gilder from London. He had set up business at 27 Bedford Street, Plymouth by the following year, but by the late 1870's was at 14 George Street running a gallery and framing business, where he remained until he retired in 1889. He held numerous sales and auctions of works in Plymouth through the 1880's, representing work by major names such as Widgery, R B Beechey etc, predominantly dealing in Devon and Cornish scenes. Many works were lost in a fire at the end of 1879 and a salvage sale was held in January 1880. Frederick retired in 1889, a huge sale of his stock was held in Plymouth, and he died 3 years later. The label on this picture bears his 14 George Street address so we know the painting probably dates between 1877 - 1889, but, of course, could have been painted a few years prior to being handled for framing by Frederick Hall.

Please note: courier companies will not insure glass or frames (or paintings for damage from either), only total loss of the package, this is framed (not glazed) so please take that into account. We pack well but you take the risk if you want it shipped with frame intact.

MastheadArt is run by Jo Eveleigh, an art dealer for 14 years commercially, a private collector prior to developing the business, operating from the leafy Cotswolds with regular sojourns in Devon and Derbyshire. Her favourite finds are studio collections of hoarded art, producing gems for the re-sale market from years of sketch collections and work which the artist never brought to the marketplace. Carrying antique stock right through to contemporary work, her favourite years are the fifty years of greatest cultural swings in Britain, between the 1920s and 1970s.

A veteran of the car industry, and having lived in various parts of the UK, Jo is now thoroughly enjoying saving great pictures for the nation. Her extensive stocklist bears testament to the fact that Jo always says she cannot walk away from a great picture. Lots of her stock is eminently suitable for creating salon wall arrangements, smaller mounted works which make wonderfully quirky space fillers.

Having had a gallery in previous years, Jo now enjoys the flexibility of selling online, through art fairs, and at a small number of retail outlets throughout the year. Viewings of any item can take place at her permanent gallery wall space at Betty and Beatties Vintage Interiors in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, where an amount of her stock is in display but any item seen online can be taken there for viewing and purchase. If you are close to any of her regular trips to Devon and Derbyshire, she is always pleased to try and meet up at a suitable venue to facilitate viewings too.
