Sydney Horne Shepherd (Scottish, 1909-1993). Dundee School of Art, Glasgow School of Art 1926-30. Exh' RSBA, Royal Scottish Academy, New English Art Club, Leicester Galleries, and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, amongst others.
Very limited edition (number 5 of 12) "Genesis", mid 1960s screen print (c. 1965). Signed.
Mount aperture is 59 x 44cm, glazed frame 79 x 62.5 cm.
Often known as "Toby" rather than Sydney, the end of his studies in 1930 saw him take up an art teaching post the at same Glasgow Art School the same year.
Post war he taught at Ealing School of Art and St Martins School of Art (early 1960s - so this work is from that period).
The artist was born in Dundee in 1909, was living in Horsham, Sussex at the time of his death in 1993.
In his professional life he referred to himself as Sydney d'Horne Shepherd until roughly the early 1960's, but the d' is not used on any official British records of his life.
In 1963 Sydney asked actor Peter O’Toole to open his art exhibition, Peter agreed and even bought one of his paintings for his Hampstead home.
Sydney retired from his art career in 1974

Frame is large and GLAZED so this cannot be insured in transit as it contains sheet glass, you may ask us to open the frame and remove artwork to be rolled and posted to you in a wide tube, or we can arrange to meet at a mutually convenient place to hand it over intact.

ALWAYS POP an Item Enquiry through before purchasing as you need to check we’re not currently in discussion with another client on the same item today, and we need to discuss the feasibility of a place we can meet to hand it over.
We are in Gloucestershire and always happy to try to hand over large or fragile works on the M5 or M4 services during the daytime if it helps. We travel fairly regularly to Derbyshire (M5 M42 A38) and Devon (M5 A38 or A30) so if you can wait for our next journey - we'll always try to meet you, payment needs to be made online first using paypal on this page or we can supply bank transfer details.

If you buy TWO or more items from MastheadArt at the same time, we will add an extra FREE art item
Usually a lightweight loose leaf original sketch or watercolour, or a good print, which you may keep and enjoy, or sell it on yourself. We hold a lot of loose stock, and can share some as a “thank you”.

MastheadArt has been trading since 2004, we specialise in salvaged and studio art of all ages, and carry a lot of smaller mounted stock perfect for gallery walls. We love the quirky smaller pieces of work which create visual talking points, and love to help someone get their real art collection off to a truly affordable start. You’ll never go back to chain store or mass produced imported prints again!
We sell at art and vintage fairs, through an interiors store in the Cotswolds, and through a variety of online platforms. We have sold in excess of 1,400 pictures online.

MastheadArt is run by Jo Eveleigh, an art dealer for 14 years commercially, a private collector prior to developing the business, operating from the leafy Cotswolds with regular sojourns in Devon and Derbyshire. Her favourite finds are studio collections of hoarded art, producing gems for the re-sale market from years of sketch collections and work which the artist never brought to the marketplace. Carrying antique stock right through to contemporary work, her favourite years are the fifty years of greatest cultural swings in Britain, between the 1920s and 1970s.

A veteran of the car industry, and having lived in various parts of the UK, Jo is now thoroughly enjoying saving great pictures for the nation. Her extensive stocklist bears testament to the fact that Jo always says she cannot walk away from a great picture. Lots of her stock is eminently suitable for creating salon wall arrangements, smaller mounted works which make wonderfully quirky space fillers.

Having had a gallery in previous years, Jo now enjoys the flexibility of selling online, through art fairs, and at a small number of retail outlets throughout the year. Viewings of any item can take place at her permanent gallery wall space at Betty and Beatties Vintage Interiors in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, where an amount of her stock is in display but any item seen online can be taken there for viewing and purchase. If you are close to any of her regular trips to Devon and Derbyshire, she is always pleased to try and meet up at a suitable venue to facilitate viewings too.
