An outstanding French Empire mahogany console table with elaborate bronze ornamentation.

Two draws and a dummy draw sit within the frieze. The central bronze escutcheon features two swans, a symbol of love and sensuality. The swan is one of the forms Zeus took to seduce women, and also emblems of Venus and the adopted symbol of Josephine.

Four turned legs are united by a turned stretcher. The two front feet have upward-pointing torch and acanthus leaf decorations, symbolising power and immortality. The French Empire often embraced Roman and Classical imagery.

There are some very minor losses, scratches and marks that do not detract from the console and all are time softened.
