A painted terracotta bust of a young French woman signed F. Citti circa 1920.

F. Citti, or Citti Frères, was a famed Parisian sculptor at the beginning of the 20th century. His work overlapped the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods in France. Numbered 325, this is one of his later pieces during the Art Deco period.

Labelled ‘La Vendenge’, translated as ‘The Grape Harvest’, implying that this woman worked at a vineyard harvesting grapes. This is affirmed by the grape design on the base and her clothes and headscarf.

The bust has great proportions and styling. Her distant gaze evokes emotions of sadness and despair. There is only loss to the paint on the tip of the nose and the back of the base. Otherwise, this piece is in very good condition with a lovely patinated finish.
