Abstract by Doreen Heaton Potworowska

MOLLY AND MAUD'S PLACE
Abstract sea scene oil on board by Doreen Heaton Potworowska (1930-2014).

The picture measures 30cm high by 38cm wide and the frame measures 56cm high by 62.5cm wide.

Doreen Heaton Potworowska attended the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham from 1949-53. At this time the academy was at the forefront of modern thinking in terms of art education and trends. It was during this time that she met Polish artist Peter Potworowski (1889-1962), who had escaped from Poland in 1943 in the German invasion of Poland. In 1952 he took up a post at Corsham as Professor of painting. Doreen became Peter's assistant and they became lovers. Between 1954 - 1958 they travelled extensively in Spain, Italy and France.

In 1958 they moved to Poland, and married shortly before Peter's death in 1962. Doreen returned to East Anglia in the mid 1980's.

Molly and Maud's specialise in beautiful, interesting and unusual decorative antiques and art.  The business is run by mother and daughter team Karen and Chloe. Karen's passion for interior design and the arts inspired Chloe from a young age. They travel extensively, acquiring their stock which is displayed in their showroom, online and at fairs around the UK. They regularly ship items worldwide.

In 2013 whilst hunting for premises for their expanding stock, they realised that the orchard behind Karen's house was a perfect starting point for them, but it already had two resident pet lambs named 'Molly and Maud'.  A new home was quickly found for them in a neighbouring field, a wooden building was then purchased and so began 'Molly and Maud's Place'. In 2016 they expanded further by building a new showroom on the premises.

The business is based in the village of Kirk Hammerton in North Yorkshire, midway between York and Harrogate just four miles from the A1(M).

The showroom is open every Saturday 10-4, at other times visitors are very welcome by appointment.
