Item Details

A pair of chinoiserie bookends, circa 1920s. Beautiful in their own right as decorative and useful objects, but all the more poignant as they were made at the Lord Roberts Memorial Workshops in Fulham.

Field Marshal Lord Roberts had long campaigned for more to be done for ex-servicemen, especially those who had been disabled in service. He took a keen interest in the Workshops and became a trustee. After his death in 1914, as a memorial to him, the workshops were expanded and named after him.

By 1920 there were 11 Workshops around the country producing a variety of items including toys, basket ware and furniture.

The label on the base of one of the bookends reads Woodwork by H. Skelton, Herts Regiment, Disability Right Arm Amp and Lacquer Work by H. Smith, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, Disability Right Leg.

It's fair to say that I love chinoiserie but these are very special...
