Late 19th Century French Japonaiserie bamboo folding wall shelf, fitted with a pair of turned elm platters with gilded birds and foliage. Attributed to Perret et Vibert’s La Maison des Bambous

Provenance: From the estate of the late Nellie Lenson-Smith (1928-2017). Nellie was a renowned Antiques dealer, quite a character, with a great eye.

Perret et Vibert
In 1872, Alfred Perret and Ernest Vibert opened a store in Paris that offered ‘natural bamboo furniture and cane seats’, to resounding success. They exhibited their oriental inspired furniture at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889 and 1900, winning two silver medals, gaining a following of royal and celebrity clients. It was not until 1895, that the company was finally named ‘La Maison des Bambous’
