Grand 19th century Glass Eglomise Apothecary jar

Huge reverse hand-painted (Verre églomisé*) antique Apothecary Jar signed; JMB A932. These highly decorative and overscale glass jars were commonly found in the finer pharmacist establishments around the late 1800's and early 1900's.

*Verre églomisé is the French term of applying a design and gilding onto the backside of glass. The name is from the 18th-century French decorator Jean-Baptiste Glomy who brought it back to fashion. The actual technique of Verre églomisé dates back to pre-Roman times.

By far and away, the hardest apothecary bottles to find, are these gigantic decorative apothecary bottles. What makes this example of antique apothecary bottles so special, is the condition, for 95% of the time, most of the gilding and painting, on the interior of the apothecary bottles are missing, but hands down, this stunning example of an antique apothecary bottle, is in the best original condition, that we have seen in the past 25 years.

An English large painted glass lidded apothecary jar from the 19th century, with the depiction of St George and the Dragon. This exquisite painted glass apothecary jar features a large gold painted lid, surmounting a painted glass body. Adorned with the depiction of St George and the Dragon, the belly depicts St George battling his famous foe, overcoming pestilence symbolized by the dragon of disease. The mythological figure is flanked with stunning background scenery. A ribbon decorated with a believed to be latin quotation, translating has proved inconclusive. With its nice proportions, lovely décor and mythological reference, this large English 19th century apothecary jar will be a great decorative accent in any home, perhaps placed above a console table or enfilade.
