Old beautiful rips rug. Woven by hand in the 1920´s by Helga Svensson. ( Born 1896) Read about Helga under Heritage here at the website. Worn, but lovely condition.

The traditional Swedish rag rug has become a symbol of the good, down-to-earth, country style living. When thinking of rag rugs, one picture old cottages or farmhouses with whitewashed floorboards, adorned with long rag rugs, striped in cheerful colors. It's also a perfect way of bringing history, warmth and personality into modern homes of today.

As the rugs are vintage, they are also unique. But back in the old days, rag rugs were treasured and having multiple rag rugs were a sign of wealth - so families that were well off would keep extra sets of rag rugs for special, festive occasions or even just "save up" rugs as treasures. Therefor we're still lucky enough to sometimes find some really old rag rugs that barely been used or not used at all.

This rug is handmade, woven in a loom by a skilled weaver in Sweden - a time consuming task.

It has not been altered, is barely if at all used. If there are any small "imperfections" it's due to the fact, that it's crafted and handmade - the more reason to love it and a proof that it's not machine made! Examine the pictures and pls feel free to ask questions if you wonder about something.

The rag rug is of course clean when you get it. If eventually it needs cleaning again, there is no need for dry clean. The washing machine will do the job, warm cycle, but it wears on the rug and might be difficult if the rug is large. Even better, is to scrub it clean by hand. Spread it on a flat outdoor surface. Vacuum thoroughly. Use a hard brush and regular dish detergent in warm water. Give it a good scrubbing. Hose it off with clean water. Hang to dry outdoors, preferably so that the water drips down along the stripes.

We are just as passionate about recycling as we are about design. Vintage and antiques offers the best of both and along the way, we have fallen in love with the traditional, handmade Swedish rag rug – an ingenious art of upcycling! That love we'd like to share with the rest of the world! From the heart of Småland, a region in Sweden also known as the Furniture District, we aim to bring history into modern homes. Rags are beautiful things when they come in the shape of rugs!

We are constantly on the search for vintage rugs, selecting them with care from private homes throughout Sweden. When we are lucky to receive rugs from grandchildren and great grandchildren of the weaveress that actually crafted the rug, it feels extra special. The rag rugs are handloomed, a craft that is still performed the same way that rag rugs have been made for more than 200 years – though it's not so commonly done today. We stock rugs from the 1800's up to about 1970/1980. Most of our stock is from 1930-1960.

The rugs are examined, washed, photographed and documented before put out for sale. If you have any questions or would like us to search for specific rugs, don't hesitate to contact us!
