Cathedral Fine Art - "The Blue Hat" by Georges Joubin (French 1888-1983) signed lower right corner oil painting on paper laid on canvas, unframed. Beautiful quality mid 20th century French oil painting, depicting a portrait of this seated young lady. She holds a blue hat in her lap; to the window by her side, we see a coastal view with golden sand and blue sea. Painted on this large scale, it is a fine example of the famous Montmartre painters work. Georges Joubin (1888-1983) was a pupil of Jean-Pierre Laurens at the Academie Julian in 1906, then of Gabriel Ferrier at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris in 1908.

In 1912 he moved to Montmartre where he participated, within a group of 19 signatories including Maurice Sselin, Pierre Bonnard, Andre Dignimont and Jules Pascin, at the founding of the Ecole de Montmartre, being the initiator of the manifesto proclaiming: "we believe we can achieve a work not nourished by abstraction, but plunging into the very roots of life". In fact, observes Gérald Schurr,“No frills in the arrangement of his paintings built by contrasts, by oppositions of powerful colors. This force, these sculptural volumes, these monumental forms, make one think of the art of Francois Desnoyer in a stripping that sweeps away everything that is not structured, everything that does not harshly express the permanence of nature ”

The painting is accompanied with an exhibition booklet (tatty and loose leafed) presented by the Musee de Montmartre on the artists work.

Condition report:
The painting is in good and sound condition. There is quite a deep scratch to the upper right corner but apart from that it would be described as in very good order.
