Erzgebirge Miner Figure c.1920

THE HOUSE OF ANTIQUES
German Erzgebirge Folk Art Guardian Miner Figure c.1920. For sale in this LOT is a very rare hand carved folk art German Erzgebirge guardian miner figure dated c.1920. This figure with its brass lantern would have originally had a small candle placed on it and sat in the window to guide the miners of the Ore mountains home at Christmas. Up until the 1700s gold and silver mining was the main occupation in the Ore mountains. As these rich minerals were depleted, many miners turned to woodworking as a livelihood. Among the items they carved were nut crackers, Christmas pyramids, light arches and incense smokers. Over the years the nut cracker has become one of the classic international symbols of Christmas. This figure however is a rare example of this folklore due to its size, condition and still holding its original candle burning lamp. This item is untouched and in overall wonderful condition for its age.
