19th Century English Hunting Scene Scrimshaw Beaker

We are proud to offer a very exquisitely decorated mid - 19th Century English scrimshaw horn beaker. Depicting a fox hunting scene traveling through a country landscape, with various houses and trees in the background and several horsemen giving chase. This is one of the largest and wonderfully decorated horn beaker examples we have had in our store and it is in excellent condition and of a good colour.

Size in inches: H 4” x W 3” x D 3”
Origin: English
Period: C.1850
Material: Horn

Condition: These items are completely solid in structure and form, an aged patina and fading of the colour has taken place due to its age, light chip to the inside rim underneath which is not noticeable once displayed. Overall, particularly good condition for its age and years of use. Close up photos have been supplied to illustrate these points so please observe carefully and propose questions to us if needed.

History: Scrimshaw is derived from the practice of sailors on whaling ships creating common tools, where the by-products of whales were readily available. The term originally referred to the making of these tools, only later referring to works of art created by whalers in their spare time.

Period:

1850

Our house style is probably best described as artistic, theatrical and, even macabre.

We often get asked by our clients, “Where did you find that?” The answer is always the same. Look hard enough and you will find what you seek.
