19th Century English Surgeons Trade Sign
We are proud to offer a unique late 19th Century English surgeons trade sign. Made from copper, remnants of original green paint, reverse etched ruby red and white milk glass original inserts still intact. This light has been rewired and is ready to plug in and enjoy as shown in the photos provided. The item would have originally been displayed outside a doctor’s surgery to advertise services provided. This light sits flat easily and can be used as a decorative interior light, the top section is not attached to the base so can easily be removed. This rare survivor is a rare and original example aged over 100 years so expect patination, weathering and damage in places (please review the detail in the condition section). A unique and one-off example in its original condition, you won’t find another example with all its features still in place like this one.
Size in inches approx.: H 31” x W 16” x D 16”
Condition: This item is completely solid in structure and form, the copper frame structure is fragile and weathered in many sections. The top of the light has 3 aged holes created from weathering and natural wear. The frame itself is fragile due to age and use but firm as a structure, The milk white glass at the crown on the light shows a coloured and grey staining due to being kept outside most of its life, When the light is illuminated the white milk glass shows a dark shadowing from the inside which doesn’t allow the white to shine through clearly due to the inside being originally painted with black paint ( one of the top white glass sections to the reverse of the light has a crack in it but has been repaired so its sits flat as normal), The Ruby red glass is also stained in sections from the inside, when its illuminated the red shows a fading black effect as shown in the photos provided. The top of the light is not joined to the base and can be removed to change the light etc. The copper frame is obviously original and very aged, its firm in its form but very frayed in sections across the item. The decorative quality of this item isn’t affected with the above issues as its more nostalgic and all original, just we like it.
