Unusual Early 20th Century Tramp Art Barometer Diorama
One of the most unusual pieces of early 20th century American tramp art we have had the privilege to uncover. Encased in a late 19th century glass and pine diorama sits a hand carved model of a mirror windowed building. To the left of the building a dog and kennel with horse. To the right a hand carved wooden figure of a man up a ladder, against a lamp post. The model has at its base a swinging paper wheel which when it is cold/or damp outside shows a dog, or when it’s going to be a warm and dry day a smiling girl will appear. The mechanism is connected from the rear which opens and can be seen, there are also metal, copper wires and mercury filaments placed to the front and top of the building assuming this helps the function. We have no idea about the mechanics of this item, but what we do know is that we have never seen the like and that it’s a highly decorative piece of American tramp art.
Size of inches: H 20” x W 29” x D 11”
Condition: Aged
Origin: America
Age: 1920 - 1940

Completely solid in structure and form, Natural aging across all surfaces. Worn wood, replaced glass mirror sections that are crudely attached with tape to the inside of the model (this could have been done recently we feel). The original 19th century glass case has wobbly glass and lovely worn age. No backed section, damaged mirrors in the windows as shown. An old object that has stood the test of time, please expect this in the condition of this item.

Period:

1930
