A truly stunning wooden workbench. This piece was bought from an elderly gentleman who advised that it belonged to his late father who passed away in his 80s. Due to its age and having been, no doubt, put through the mill as one would expect for such an item, it had to undergo some restoration to bring it back to life. The work was undertaken by a professional restorer. The work undertaken was as follows: Washed, cleaned, oiled and waxed.

Bottom drawers were made as the old ones were missing and painted with pigments in the traditional way. Period floorboards were used to keep within the timeline also. The stretchers inside the carcass are original. The ends only of the back legs were replaced. Historic worm treated.

This antique workbench with its vice, drawers above, below and underneath shelf makes it, we think, a rather special one. The patina is exceptional. The craquelure to the top drawers forms part of its appeal. The naive tools holder in the small top shelf compartment is charming, and more so when you open and see it for the first time. We believe this bench may well have been scratch built and a one off.

This piece can take pride in any setting but its size is such that it can fit in most homes for that industrial look, small retail outlets and small work shops. A great statement peice which would work wonders for an interior design project too.

Welcome to The Tractor Shed.

Having left my profession as a lawyer, I had the opportunity to turn my attention to my real passion: buying and selling antiques of all eras.

I quickly found that the best way forward was to buy what I like; items that make my heart flutter on seeing them for the first time and that I would like to have in my own home. I hope you feel exactly the same way when you look through my collection.

The name 'The Tractor Shed' came about after doing some research into the origins of my family home. We discovered that it was converted from the offices of a business where tractors were restored and sold in the 1960s and 1970s, keeping them going for decades. With this ethos of preserving things rather then pursuing the often-throwaway attitude we so often now see, I started my small business dealing in beautiful items that deserve to be with us for years to come.

Opening hours: Mon - Sat 10am to 6pm. I'm very happy to take calls at any reasonable times outside of these hours, esepcially for those clients where there is a time difference. Please don't hesitate to contact me as I would be delighted to assist to you.
