This is an attractive and useful antique two part book cabinet which dates to around 1900.

Made of mahogany, oak veneers and pine it is an attractive piece which is quite simply made and is fairly lightweight, a piece made for aesthetic purposes and display rather than sturdiness and durability. It has the benefit of splitting into two parts which makes it easy to transport and place in any home.

The cabinet is ideal for use in a kitchen, dining room or office, perfect for books and display or perhaps for use as a drinks cupboard or kitchen storage, its simple lines and classic Edwardian style make it a good statement piece for any home.

The base is fitted with two panelled doors which open to reveal a cupboard with shelf. Set above the cupboard a single wide drawer offers storage space for cutlery, paperwork or linens, the front is fitted with decorative drop handles.

The top is fitted with double glazed doors which are lockable. The interior has three adjustable wooden shelves which sit on wooden batons set into the sides of the cabinet.

I have hand painted the interior of the top section in Farrow and Balls 'Moles Breath', a lovely pale grey colour before waxing the paintwork for protection.

The oak veneer has a naturally waxed finish which has a nice sheen.

CONDITION

This piece is generally in good structural condition, there are various small marks here and there to the wood, a couple of chips of veneer missing from the base plinth and a few dents and scratches to the top of the base section. The cornicing to the top has been repaired on one side where it had split away. Inside the base cupboard there are two large knots of wood missing, these look like two holes.

VINTAGE HOUSE is a small family run business based in South Devon, selling quality hand painted vintage and antique furniture and quirky home wares.

Our interest in Vintage furnishings has been years in the making.  From an early age I spent time at auctions and antique fairs in South Devon with my mum, a passion inherited from my eccentric grandmother who had an eye for quality and a hoarders heart for beautiful things.

Subsequently what started as a hobby has turned into a full time business, turning the endless search for things we love into things we can sell from our home and in our online store.

We source quality antique and vintage furniture from the 19th and 20th centuries and where necessary revive and restore pieces to bring them back to life and up-to-date.

In our workshop we undertake traditional French polishing and upholstery methods, as well as self taught painting techniques to re-finish pieces that require attention.

Most of our furniture is made of solid wood, usually oak, mahogany or pine, we appreciate quality and craftsmanship and prefer selling British made furniture whenever possible.

Selling pieces that are useful and practical in the modern home, storage is always a key theme, appreciating that people need attractive items that also provide functionality.

Our painted furniture is created using eco-friendly paints and waxes from Rustoleum, Farrow and Ball and The Little Greene Paint Company.

It has always been important to us to have a 'green' business, we love the concept of recycling old furniture instead of buying new.

Quality furniture is hard to find at a reasonable and affordable price and we feel that we provide both.  The things we sell don't belong in the mass produced age of flat pack furniture, but are tailored towards an individuality that will suit both modern and vintage homes alike.
