A charming 20th Century French salon pouffe in the Napoleon III taste.


Richly upholstered in velvet with decorative passementerie and tassel detailing. The rounded form is enhanced by elegant draped swags trimmed with braid and elaborate tassels, creating a theatrical silhouette typical of French Belle Époque interiors. Raised discreetly on casters, the piece was designed for flexibility within the drawing room, easily moved to serve as a footstool or occasional seat. Such pouffes were commonly found in French salons and boudoirs, where luxurious textiles and ornate trim played an important role in interior decoration.


The velvet upholstery in warm rose and golden tones, together with the layered trims and fringe, gives the piece a sumptuous, almost stage-like presence. The upholstery appears to be later, while the form and construction suggest an earlier frame dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. An evocative decorative accent suited to eclectic, maximalist, or traditional interiors, equally effective as a sculptural textile piece or practical seating. In good condition, with one tassel absent, commensurate with age. The underside dust cover has been later refreshed.
