A large and highly decorative 20th Century French oil on canvas depicting lavender harvesters working amongst the fields of Valvignères in the Ardèche region of Southern France.


Executed in a bold impasto technique, the painting displays a richly textured surface with thick palette-knife work creating depth, movement and vibrant colour throughout the composition. The endless rows of lavender lead the eye towards the distant hills beneath a luminous Provençal sky. Signed and dated lower right, B. Durand, 1986. The reverse bears the inscription 'Lavandes à Valvignères' together with the artist’s address in Le Pontet, near Avignon. Presented in its original gilt frame.


A wonderfully atmospheric piece that captures one of the most iconic landscapes of southern France and would sit comfortably within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
