A sunlit Mediterranean promenade beneath the distinctive canopies of parasol pines, their broad forms casting patterned shade across the path as figures stroll beside the water.


 


In the foreground a solitary figure, possibly a sailor, sits quietly on the embankment, introducing a contemplative note to the scene.


 


Painted with confident, economical brushwork and a harmonious palette of warm ochres, cool blues and soft greens, the work captures the brilliance and ease of light in the southern France.


Perret exhibited in Lyon and Paris and later spent much of his life in the south of France. He served as President of the Jury of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts.


 


Oil on board. Signed lower right. In a simple recessed frame of the period.
