Item Description
Late 19th Century Brass Pelican In Her Piety Door Knocker. A depiction of a Pelican piercing her own breast bone to feed her blood to her young.
Early Christians had adopted this depiction by the 2nd Century & started using it in text and images. The idea of a Pelican Vulning Herself for the sake of her young became a religious symbol. The image can still be seen today in many Churches & Religious buildings up and down the country. The last image showing the Pelican In Her Piety in a stained glass window in Scotland.
Small in size (3.5" H) & in very good condition, this design of door knocker is very rare & not often seen for sale. Will be English made but is unmarked as such with any makers name or registered design number stamping. This would maybe lead us to believe this particular design of door knocker was only made in small numbers & possibly gifted or even sold via a Church or Cathedral at the time. Of course this is just a thought.
UK inland tracked delivery £5. Worldwide tracked delivery is available for £35.
