Item Details

An exceptionally decorative Anglo-Indian hardwood box, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century and richly carved throughout with birds, intertwining vines, leaves and scrolling foliate ornament.
The lid is particularly impressive, its deep-relief carving creating an almost three-dimensional canopy of branches and foliage populated by birds. Pierced and carved panels continue around all four sides, giving the box remarkable depth, shadow and texture from every angle.
At 31cm wide, it is a substantial example with considerably more presence than a typical small jewellery or trinket box. The interior is equally appealing: the underside of the lid is carved with flowers and foliage around a central shield-shaped cartouche, left uninscribed.
Possibly originally intended as a cigar, document or keepsake box, it now works beautifully as a statement desk box or simply as a sculptural decorative object.
The dark hardwood has developed a rich, warm patina, with light wear and minor imperfections consistent with age and use.
Condition
