Canaletos Bar, Madrid 1954

A charming and colourful painting on board entitled 'Canaletos Bar, Madrid, 1954' by artist Eileen Maud Dutton, initialled E M D lower left. Appears to be original frame. An unusual piece showing a quintessential, possibly late Summer scene, in a Spanish Town Square, with an imposing building in the background and a fountain in the Square. With some wearing or carrying coats or shawls to keep out a late evening chill perhaps whilst they drink and socialise with friends and the leaves on the bushy tree turning slightly autumunal. The suited man with glasses at the front of the setting, sitting alone at a table is perhaps waiting for the young lady approaching from behind in the green top, for a date perhaps, she looked on by some admiring glances. Or is she in fact meeting the Gentleman coming around her right as the man at the table has only one glass? Possibilities abound. The Cafe chairs are interesting and highlight, along with the style of clothes and hair how this scene differs from the decade before and seems to want to depict happier, more affluent times. Overall a lovely and interesting piece with something new discovered each time you take a look. It's a good size too at approx 34" x 28" in it's frame. Did the artist paint this from memory, in person or something else completely, we will never know. HOW
