Item Description
Cizhou ware or Tz'u-chou ware is typically recognised as being produced during the Chinese Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 and later into the early 18th Century. This impressive high-fired stoneware jar is in great condition, with its deep cream base slip and brown hand painted slip decoration - the essence of a Cizhou vase/jar.
This particular vase has beautiful and understated decoration, sometimes less is more. Loosely brushed waves encompassing the neck and middle of the vase, and botanical motifs on the shoulders and body of the vase. We believe that some of the motifs symbolise taste and smell.
The Jars were used to store and preserve foods and liquids, above ground, the shape of this one may indicate it held wine.
This Chinese Cizhou vase is a beautiful and impressive antique piece, perfect for collectors or those looking to add some history to their home. The intricate design and craftmanship are testament to the skill of the Chinese artisans who created it many, many years ago.
Due to the impressive age of the vase there are chips and glazing imperfections but we think its only adds to its authenticity and testament to the timelessness of handmade pottery. This wonderful piece will make any room light up, simply used a main decoration feature.
The approximate dimensions of this vase are as follows- H - 72cm, W - 40cm.
