Item Description

This Japanese Tansu chest dates to the latter part of the Meiji Era (1868-1912) - circa 1900 and is made in the Kanto style which became the norm for Japanese Tansu in the 20th century. Kanto Tansu are from the fertile Kanto plain which includes the city of Tokyo.

This particular chest is remarkable, its in perfect condition aside from one handle (bottom middle) that we had to replace. All other metalwork is its original. The two side handles will have been lifted up and a bar placed through to be able to carry the chest with (a bit more) ease! It is complete with the safe in the bottom right which has two drawers inside, used for the storage of valuables.

And nearly all Tansu were made to be easily portable and to store in Kura (fireproof storehouses) In case a fire brakes out.

The dimensions of this chest are as follows- H - 89cm, L - 84.5cm, W - 41cm.
